Under the direction of the Director of Public Works and Solid Waste Superintendent, performs semi-skilled manual labor throughout the McCook City limits.
Supervisory Responsibilities
None.
Examples of Principal Duties
Assists in all phases of solid waste.
Occasionally assists in the recycling operation.
Occasionally assists with grounds maintenance.
Performs duties to insure compliance with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
Operates dump trucks, pickup and trailer, skid loader.
Frequently operates various powered and non-powered hand tools.
Occasionally assists in wood chipping operation.
Maintains Transfer Station buildings and equipment.
Hauls large refuse items from alleys to the Transfer Station, including brush.
Picks up, repairs and replaces collection containers as needed.
Occasionally performs minor vehicle repair.
Opens and closes, locks and unlocks city facilities as needed.
Performs other work as required.
Peripheral Duties
Assists other departments as requested by Director of Public Works or Solid Waste Superintendent.
Maintains departmental equipment, facilities, and supplies.
Performs general custodial duties and maintenance on City owned buildings as assigned. May serve as a member on various employee committees, as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
1) High school diploma or equivalent.
2) Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Special Requirements
1) Must possess, or be able to obtain by date of hire, a valid Nebraska Driver’s License.
2) Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
3) Must be insurable through the city’s insurance carrier.
4) May be required to work more than forty hours per week including evenings, holidays and/or weekends.
5) May be required to obtain specific certifications as needed.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 85 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
