DISPATCHER

NATURE OF WORK
Performs a variety of dispatch/communications duties, clerical and receptionist duties, record maintenance functions.
SUPERVISION
Under the day-to-day supervision of the Chief Dispatcher and the general supervision of the Chief of Police.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Operates the police radio system in compliance with departmental policy and FCC regulation, including the paging of emergency response units (ambulance, fire, and law enforcement).
· Answers and handles all 911 emergency calls for service.
· Performs routine clerical and administrative work in answering phones, receiving the public, provides customer assistance, cashiering, data processing and bookkeeping.
· Maintains daily logs for police activity and generates record of calls for service. Operates office machines as required.
· Composes, types and edits a variety of correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy and completeness.
· Issues special permits including bicycle firearms permits, fingerprint cards, etc.
· Maintains department equipment, facilities and supplies.
· May serve as a member on various employee committees, as assigned.
· Operates the department's NCIC computer terminal in accordance with the rules and regulations governing same.
· Administers the Salvation Army Voucher process for the department.
· Administers the PATH Grant process for the department.
· Other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Ability to read, write and understand the English language at eleventh grade level at a minimum.
· Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
· Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
· Ability to communicate effectively.
· Ability to perform basic math computations.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
· The ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations.
· The ability to work in a fast-paced environment when the situation requires it.
· Must have working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and office machines.
· Ability to handle stressful situations.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
· Must have working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and office machines; and keyboard at 50 words per minute, minimum.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Two years of general office, communications or records management experience, or
· An equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
· Must be a citizen of the United States.
· Must be 21 years of age or older.
· Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Nebraska Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state.
· Must be insurable through the City's insurance carrier.
· May not have been convicted of any felony or any State, Federal, Military or Foreign Court of a crime punishable by imprisonment.
· Must maintain current CPR certification.
· Satisfactory completion of NCIC training at Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center within one year of employment.

Must have normal hearing or hearing correctable to normal parameters and must exhibit no signs of irreversible disease that will affect hearing.
Work is generally performed in a standard office setting or building facility with normal conditions of heat, humidity, fumes, odors, or dust and involves sitting for prolonged periods of time, answering the telephone and operating computer equipment. Working environment involves listening and communicating in noisy, distracting environments, responding quickly to multiple priorities under time pressures and in emergency situations.
Work involves considerable public contact and involves working shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
